Frequently asked questions

Yes. I’m in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO and Aetna PPO plans. If you have a different plan, I can give you a superbill so you can ask your insurance company to reimburse you for out-of-network care. Reimbursement varies by plan, so it’s worth calling your insurer to ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits.
-
If you’re using BCBS PPO or Aetna PPO, you’ll typically pay your plan’s copay or coinsurance. Self-pay sessions are $185 for individual therapy and $200 for couples. I don’t offer a sliding scale at this time.
-
All my sessions are by secure video. I can work with adults anywhere in Illinois, including Chicago, the suburbs, and downstate. You can join from home, your office, your studio, or on the road, as long as you’re physically in Illinois during the session.

Most anxiety treatment focuses on what you’re worried about: the job, your health, the relationship. That’s the content of anxiety. I work with these issues, and I also help you zoom out, to see how your anxiety works: the loops of checking, seeking reassurance, replaying conversations, and the body sounding alarms. That’s the mechanism. Arguing with the content tends to feed it, because there’s always another “what if.” Once you can recognize the mechanism, you stop getting pulled into every new worry, and the whole pattern loosens its grip. I draw on CBT, mindfulness, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and awareness-based approaches to get there.

Yes. This is one of my favorite parts of my work. I’m a working independent musician myself, and I’m an approved provider for Backline, the mental health organization for musicians and music industry workers. I help creatives with performance anxiety, creative blocks, self-doubt, the financial ups and downs of an artistic career, and balancing creative work with a day job or family.

If this is your first therapy session, you might be wondering what to expect! Many people are surprised to learn how comfortable the first session can be.
We begin our first session with discussing confidentiality and other protocols of therapy.
After this, the majority of the session is focused on getting to know you and what brings you to therapy. We will identify your personal goals and what you would like to get out of counseling, as well as decide how frequently we will meet, based on your schedule and needs.
-
A standard counseling session lasts 45-53 minutes. Sessions can be longer if needed.

When working with clients, my style draws from many counseling theories. I will work with you to determine which approaches might be the best fit for your individual needs. I work thoughtfully to find an approach that feels comfortable, engaging, and appropriate for your areas of need.
My training at Northwestern University focused on many therapeutic approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and client-centered therapy. I am also very interested in reality therapy, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness approaches to counseling.

Anxiety, OCD and intrusive thoughts, depression, couples and relationship issues, grief and loss, life transitions, alcohol and substance use, and therapy for artists and creatives. I’ve also worked with many professionals in Chicago’s legal and tech fields.
-
Yes, I frequently work with couples. I assist couples who are looking for support in communicating better, managing conflict, deciding what ‘next steps’ to take in the relationship, working through affairs/infidelity, and pre-marital counseling.
-
I do not personally prescribe medication, as medication can only be prescribed by a medical doctor or psychiatrist.
As a general counseling philosophy, I believe it is best practice to first see if we can address your needs without medication.
However, medication can be extraordinarily helpful for some people. If we decide together medication is appropriate, I can offer referrals to psychiatrists who can prescribe medication.
-
I do not offer sliding scale appointments at this time. If you have insurance but are out-of-network, I can provide you with a superbill to seek reimbursement from your insurance company. Keep in mind you may not be reimbursed at the full rate.
-
Sometimes canceling or rescheduling an appointment is necessary, and we are happy to work with you to reschedule your appointment to best fit your needs.
Please note that due to a limited number of sessions available per week, cancellations must be made no less than 24 hours in advance.
Cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance will incur an automatic out-of-pocket fee of $130.
